Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute – AFNI

The Nautical Institute is a leading international representative body for maritime professionals involved in the control of sea-going ships.

They provide a wide range of services to enhance the professional standing and knowledge of our members who are drawn from all sectors of the maritime world.

Associate Fellow (AFNI) Must match one or more of the following criteria:

  • Command of a commercial or naval sea-going vessel
  • Other senior position at sea
  • Senior management position ashore of equivalent standing to command at sea

Cayman Islands LAP Certificate (Master)

Masters and senior officers serving at the management level are required to have an appropriate knowledge of the Laws and Administrative Procedures (LAP) relative to the flag of the ship in which they serve.

In order to meet its obligations under STCW 95 the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI) has instituted a LAP test for Masters and senior officers intending to serve on Cayman Islands ships and acceptable evidence of having passed this test is a pre-requisite for the issue of a “recognition” endorsement”, under STCW 95, for service on such ships.

Chartered Management Institute Level 7 Certificate  – Strategic Management & Leadership

The Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management & Leadership is a qualification aimed at senior managers and directors.

CMI qualifications at QCF Level 7 portray practical skills and competences that are rated in academic terms as being comparable to a Master’s Degrees.

Company Security Officer (CSO) Certificate

Under the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), every shipping company is required to appoint a Company Security Officer.

Under the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), every shipping company is required to appoint a Company Security Officer, who is responsible for the ship’s safety and security.

The certificate is awarded on completion of a 4 day course which then certifies the CSO to carry out the following;

  • organise and ensure that ship security assessments are carried out and the findings used in the ship security plan development
  • ensure the development, submission for approval and, thereafter, the implementation and maintenance of the ship security plan
  • enhance security awareness and vigilance while ensuring security communication and co-operation between the ship’s crew, company personnel and contracting governments
  • undertake internal audits and review security activities.

Designated Person Ashore (DPA) Certificate

The Course objective is to provide training for all DPAs (and those preparing to become DPAs) in order that they can fully understand their responsibilities and roles of this important position taking account of full compliance with the ISM Code.

Designated Person should have a minimum of formal education as follows:

  • qualifications from a tertiary institution recognized by the Administration or by the recognized organization, within a relevant field of management, engineering or physical science, or
  • qualifications and seagoing experience as a certified ship officer pursuant to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended, or
  • other formal education combined with not less than three years practical senior level experience in ship management operations.

Drug Testing ‘Letter of Competence’

The letter was presented by a certified Doctor on completion of dedicated ‘One to One’ training at ‘UK Drug Testing’ based in Norfolk, UK.

Through the combination of interactive tutorials, workshops, photo site tour, case studies and simulated audits.

A one-day course aimed at all senior ship officers, all company managers, designated persons ashore (DPAs), superintendents, auditors and all those who inspect ships.

Marshall Islands Yacht Compliance Certificate

Issued by the Maritime Administrator of the Republic of the Marshall Islands as confirmation of attendance of ‘Yacht Compliance Training’ held in Roosendaal, Netherlands.

Shipboard ‘Safety Officer’ Certificate

This course is for seafarers who are about to serve, or are already serving as either safety representatives or safety officers.

This training is intended to meet the requirements set out in The Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations and the Code of Safe Working Practice for Merchant Seafarers (CoSWP).

The course addresses both accident prevention and accident investigation.

The aims of the course are to ensure that the delegates will:

  • Understand the duties of the SSO
  • Have considered the legal framework for safety
  • Understand the relationship between the ISM code, safety management onboard ship

Conflict Management Certificate

The course explains the different types of workplace conflict, including the four main categories of assault, and how to recognise potential signs.

There is information on the UK health and safety laws in regards to criminal behaviour, violence and self-defence. The Conflict Management course also highlights how to undertake and implement a ‘Conflict Management Risk Assessment’ and gives tips to managers and team leaders on how to deal with confrontation amongst their colleagues.

The Equality and Diversity training course has been designed to help learners understand more about their responsibilities for promoting equality and diversity in the workplace.
